As part of their commitment to academic training based on experience and connection with the country's institutions, students of the Bachelor of Law and Political Science at UMECIT, La Chorrera campus, participated in a discussion on mediation organized by the Judicial Branch of Panama West, within the framework of the Continuing Education and Learning Program.
The activity brought together 17 students from the evening and Saturday programs, including interns from the Legal Clinic, who were accompanied by a professor and the University Extension Coordinator from the campus. The initiative was made possible through collaboration between UMECIT and the Judicial Branch, as part of the cooperation agreement between the two institutions.
During the session, specialists from the Mediation Center addressed the legal framework, procedures, and importance of mediation as an alternative mechanism for the peaceful resolution of conflicts, highlighting its contribution to strengthening the justice system. Participants also learned about the process for handling cases referred by judges and justices of the peace, enriching their understanding of this legal tool.
As part of the experience, the students toured the mediation rooms and attended public court hearings, depending on the nature of each case. For many, this was their first experience in a real court setting, allowing them to strengthen their professional skills and connect classroom knowledge with practical application.
With these types of activities, UMECIT reaffirms its commitment to comprehensive training, strengthened by strategic alliances that bring students closer to the reality of professional practice and contribute to the development of lawyers prepared to promote a more accessible, efficient and dialogue-oriented justice system.
