Dialogue between academia, business and government at the "Connecting Education and Employment" meeting“

The UMECIT headquarters in La Chorrera was the setting for the meeting “Connecting Education and Employment: Talent, Opportunity and Science”, an initiative that brought together representatives from the business sector, public institutions, teachers, students and graduates with the purpose of strengthening the connection between higher education and the real needs of the labor market.

More than an outreach activity, the meeting was consolidated as a space for collective construction where academia, private enterprise and the State aligned strategic visions to respond to one of the great current challenges: to train relevant talent for a constantly transforming work environment.

The event brought together more than 55 participants from businesses, government agencies, and local governments, who actively engaged in seven working groups organized around six strategic areas. This methodology fostered a participatory dialogue aimed at generating concrete proposals to strengthen employability and innovation in West Panama.

Among the participants were representatives from Cemento Progreso, Grupo Robles Typsa, Syscom Store, INADEH, AMPYME, the Ministry of Environment, the Public Ministry, the Ministry of Commerce and Industries, the National Police, the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, as well as authorities from the Municipality of La Chorrera, the Municipality of Arraiján and the Community Board of Barrio Colón, among other key actors in the educational and productive ecosystem.

One of the most relevant aspects was the active participation of teachers, administrators, students and graduates of UMECIT, who contributed from their real experiences of training and job placement, enriching the analysis on the skills and opportunities demanded by the current context.

During the working sessions, the urgent need to align academic programs with labor market dynamics was identified, highlighting the importance of strengthening digital, interdisciplinary, and adaptable profiles. Likewise, the development of transversal skills such as communication, critical thinking, innovation, and teamwork, considered fundamental for employability today, was emphasized.

Across all topics, the discussions highlighted the importance of promoting equity, entrepreneurship, and the creation of opportunities in regions like West Panama, advocating for a more flexible, practical higher education that is connected to the country's social and economic realities.

The meeting also strengthened networks and opened opportunities for future strategic alliances, applied research projects, curriculum updates, and new initiatives focused on professional and business development.

As a result, the working groups produced a clear roadmap focused on strengthening the collaboration between academia, business and government, promoting innovation and generating real opportunities for growth and employability for new generations.
