In commemoration of World HIV Testing Day, the Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology (UMECIT), La Chorrera campus, in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MINSA) of West Panama, held a successful free rapid HIV testing event, reaffirming its commitment to promoting health, prevention and well-being of the university community.
The activity was organized by the campus's Extension Coordination, led by Alexis Del Cid, with the support of the Campus Coordinator, Ernesto Martínez, and the assistance of the Panama West Ministry of Health team. Also participating were Martha Bravo, from the University Services and Care Center (CASU); Henyi Edghill, a volunteer with the Hands That Transform program; and Professor Amelia Sarco, who visited classrooms inviting students, faculty, and administrative staff to volunteer in this important prevention initiative.
During the event, specialized staff from the Ministry of Health conducted a total of 50 free, voluntary, and confidential rapid HIV tests. At the same time, the professionals offered guidance on HIV prevention and other sexually transmitted infections, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis as a key tool for healthcare and timely decision-making.
As part of the awareness-raising activities, condoms and educational materials were also distributed, strengthening the culture of self-care and prevention among members of the university community.
The response was overwhelmingly positive. The 50 available tests were used up in less than three hours, demonstrating the interest and commitment of students, faculty, and staff to their health and well-being. Due to high demand, several students were unable to access the service, as testing was only available at Campus B during the daytime.
Given this significant participation, the Extension Coordination initiated negotiations with the Ministry of Health to organize a new session that would allow them to serve the students of the evening shift and expand the reach of this initiative.
With activities like this, UMECIT continues to strengthen inter-institutional alliances and promote spaces for prevention, education and health promotion, contributing to the comprehensive training of its university community and fostering a culture of responsibility, well-being and self-care.
