As part of the celebrations for Black History Month, UMECIT, Chitré branch, strengthened ties with the Down Syndrome Children's Foundation of Herrera through a cultural, inclusive and community day, aimed at promoting diversity, coexistence and the recognition of our cultural roots.
The event's main objective was to highlight the historical and cultural contributions of the Black ethnic group in Panama, while also creating spaces for integration and healthy recreation for the young people and their families who are part of the foundation.
During the event, students, staff, and participants shared a festive atmosphere filled with joy, culture, and camaraderie. The program included traditional dance performances, an exhibition of Afro-Caribbean clothing, and a tasting of dishes representative of Afro-Caribbean cuisine, allowing attendees to enjoy and appreciate the rich cultural heritage that forms part of our national identity.
UMECIT Chitré Campus highlighted that this initiative is part of the pillars of university extension, reaffirming the institutional commitment to building a more inclusive, empathetic society that respects cultural and functional diversity.
The university also thanked the Down Syndrome Children's Foundation of Herrera for opening this space for coexistence, which not only pays homage to the Afro-descendant roots of Panama, but also strengthens the social and emotional development of the participants through art, culture and community integration.
With actions like this, UMECIT continues to promote educational experiences that transcend the classroom and strengthen the human and social commitment of the university community.
