Beach cleanup day in Veracruz contributes to the collection of four tons of waste
As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and university social responsibility, UMECIT, La Chorrera campus, actively participated in a beach cleanup day held in the township of Veracruz, district of Arraiján.
The activity brought together more than 30 students from the Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Management Administration, accompanied by four teachers from the program, who had the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom through a learning and service experience focused on protecting the environment and the well-being of the community.
The event also included the participation of representatives from the Organized Community of Veracruz (OBC), technical and administrative staff from the Ministry of Environment of the Panama West and Panama Central regional offices, members of the National Aeronaval Service (SENAN), local authorities, community boards and representatives of the legislative body.
During the cleanup, a large amount of solid waste was collected, which was negatively impacting the coastal ecosystems of the area. The waste removed included plastics, glass, metals, construction materials, various types of containers, and abandoned tires. Thanks to the combined efforts of all participants, approximately four tons of trash were removed, significantly contributing to the recovery and conservation of this important natural area.
The event was organized by the Ministry of the Environment in response to a request from the Organized Community of Veracruz, which identified the need to address coastal areas affected by waste accumulation. Following this invitation, the UMECIT Extension Coordination facilitated the participation of students and faculty, strengthening cooperation between academia, government institutions, and the community.
Beyond the beach cleanup, the activity provided a valuable opportunity to promote environmental education, strengthen public awareness about proper waste management, and raise participants' understanding of the importance of protecting marine and coastal ecosystems. These actions directly contribute to biodiversity conservation, the protection of marine wildlife, and the development of a culture of environmental responsibility.
The day was marked by the enthusiasm, commitment, and collaborative work of all participants, demonstrating that the union between universities, public institutions, and organized communities is fundamental to generating positive and lasting changes in favor of the environment and sustainable development of Panama.
Representing UMECIT was Mr. Alexis Del Cid, Extension Coordinator at the La Chorrera campus, who supported the coordination and logistics for the integration of students and teachers in this important environmental initiative.
With initiatives like this, UMECIT reaffirms its mission to train professionals committed to sustainability, capable of leading actions that contribute to the preservation of natural resources and the well-being of future generations.
