The Santiago branch of UMECIT held a scientific outreach event in the community of Lovaina, in the district of Las Palmas, where the results of the research entitled "Environmental problems of the Lovaina River due to the extraction of stone material for the construction of the Soná-Pixvae road" were shared, led by the research professor Maylyn Cáceres.
The event brought together community residents, parents, and local authorities, creating an important space for dialogue and exchange between academia and the population directly impacted by this environmental problem. Among those in attendance were the community representative, Concepción Santos, and the mayor of the Las Palmas district, Ezequiel Rodríguez.
During the presentation, the research professor outlined the main findings of the study, highlighting the environmental effects associated with the extraction of stone material from the Lovaina River. Among the identified impacts are the alteration and erosion of the riverbed, sedimentation processes, increased turbidity and deterioration of water quality, as well as damage to aquatic and riparian habitats, affecting both flora and fauna and soil conditions in the area.
The event not only allowed for the sharing of scientific evidence with the community, but also opened spaces for reflection on the importance of protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable practices that minimize the environmental impact in rural areas.
This activity highlights one of the fundamental processes of scientific research: the dissemination of results. Through these actions, UMECIT strengthens its ties with communities and reaffirms its commitment to research that transcends the academic sphere, addressing the real needs of the surrounding environment and contributing to the search for solutions to problems that directly affect the population.
