Umecit – University in Panama

Open science for the sustainable development of Azuero

The Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology (UMECIT), Chitré campus, continues to strengthen its commitment to open science by putting knowledge at the service of society. As part of this vision, the university shared the results of its institutional research with the Green Foundation. «"Incidence of gastrointestinal diseases associated with wastewater in the community of Boca Parita, Monagrillo, Herrera – 2025"», promoting open access to scientific information to contribute to the sustainable development of the region.

The delivery of this study responds to a request from the Green Foundation, an organization interested in strengthening its environmental and community programs through scientific evidence related to the Retén area in Monagrillo. This initiative reflects the confidence that various organizations place in UMECIT's research output and its contribution to the development of the Azuero region.

The research results constitute a valuable tool for decision-making, the design of new community intervention strategies, and the promotion of future research aimed at protecting the environment, public health, and the well-being of communities.

This collaboration reaffirms that the articulation between academia and social organizations allows research to be transformed into concrete actions that generate a positive impact in the territories, strengthening sustainable development from a participatory and evidence-based approach.

With this initiative, UMECIT, through its Research and Innovation Directorate, consolidates its institutional policy of open access to knowledge, promoting collaborative, transparent science committed to the needs of society, thus contributing to the construction of a more sustainable Panama.
