As part of the Psycho-oncology course, taught by Professor Aleyda Wardrope, our students participated in an academic meeting with guest panelist Rita Barrera de Segura, who addressed the topic "Intervention in stages of grief in cancer patients and their families.".
The activity provided a space for reflection on the various emotional experiences that can arise in the face of cancer, both for patients and their families. The different stages of grief were discussed, as well as the importance of providing sensitive and timely psychological support throughout this process.
The meeting also broadened the perspective on the concept of grief, recognizing that it is not solely related to loss. In the context of cancer, it can arise in response to the changes brought about by the disease, the fears, uncertainties, and transformations experienced by the patient and their family.
In this scenario, the Psychology professional plays a fundamental role through listening, guidance and emotional support, helping patients and families to cope with the different situations that arise during the disease process.
These types of academic experiences strengthen the training of our students and allow them to approach, from the classroom, situations that require professional knowledge, but also sensitivity and human understanding.
We continue learning to understand and support human beings in all their dimensions.
