In an emotional ceremony, the Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology -UMECIT- has had the honor of recognizing and celebrating the invaluable contribution of women in our academic community and in society in general. The event, titled "Tribute to Women: Cecilia Rojas de Nieto Award", has been a well-deserved tribute to the dedication, strength and courage of women who, day after day, play fundamental roles in the workplace and at home.
In the 2024 edition of this significant event, the distinctions of the “Cecilia Rojas de Nieto” medal have been awarded to four exceptional women:
Martha Lozano: Recognized as Administrative Woman of the Year, Martha has stood out for her commitment, efficiency and professionalism in her work within the university.
Stella Escala: As Teacher of the Year at UMECIT's Panama Campus, Stella has left an indelible mark on the education of our students, inspiring them with her passion and dedication.
Mirna Mariela Samaniego González: At the La Chorrera Campus, Mirna has been recognized as Teacher of the Year, being a fundamental pillar in the teaching-learning process and an example to follow for her colleagues and students.
Gila Cecilia De León: The UMECIT 2024 Woman of the Year distinction has been awarded to Gila Cecilia De León, who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to academic excellence, gender equity, and the empowerment of women at our institution.
The rector of UMECIT, Dr. José Alberto Nieto Roja, in his speech during the ceremony, highlighted the importance of valuing and recognizing the significant role of women in Panamanian society, highlighting their work as mother, wife, professional and leader in various areas of life.
As part of the programmed activities, an inspiring keynote lecture entitled "Advances, Challenges and Opportunities for Women in the Educational Field" was held, given by Dr. Aracellys de León. The speaker shared revealing statistics about the challenges and opportunities that women face in the workplace and education, highlighting the importance of providing equal opportunities for the full development of female capabilities.
The event culminated with an emotional recognition of all the women present, highlighting their courage, determination and contribution to the progress and well-being of society. The Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology reaffirms its commitment to continue promoting gender equality, female empowerment and respect for women's rights in all areas of life.
