We commemorate World Day for Safety and Health at Work with a high-impact academic event.

The Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology -UMECIT- successfully held the II Occupational Health and Safety Conference, last Wednesday, April 23, 2025, within the framework of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

This academic event was held under the motto proposed by the International Labour Organization (ILO): “Revolutionizing health and safety: The role of AI and digitalization in the workplace”, with the purpose of reflect on the challenges and opportunities that emerging technologies bring to today's work environments.

The event was attended by institutional authorities such as the UMECIT Vice-Rector, Mauricio Sierra; Director of Outreach, Yelitza González; Director of Accreditation, Gressy Zúñiga; and the Coordinator of the Occupational Health and Safety program, Ricaurte Bethancourt..

Also participating were prominent national and international speakers, including:

  • Mr. Juan José Urbina, ILO Project Coordinator in Panama

  • Representatives of the Ministry of Labor and Workforce Development

  • Magister Michael Castillo, University of Panama

  • Master Julie Guerrero, EON XR project leader

  • Professor Koritza Ortega

  • Professor José Iván Rodríguez, president of the Occupational Health and Safety Union

During the conferences, crucial topics were addressed such as the use of Artificial intelligence, virtual reality, data analysis, teleworking, and digital platforms, elements that are profoundly transforming work dynamics.

The active participation of students, teachers and graduates of the career of Occupational Safety and Health reaffirmed UMECIT's commitment to a Comprehensive, up-to-date training aligned with the contemporary challenges of the digitalized world of work.

This academic day demonstrated UMECIT's leadership in the promotion of preventive culture, he strengthening of professional skills and the generation of knowledge applied to sustainable development already the improvement of working conditions in Panama and the region.
