On May 29, the Association of Professional Soccer Players of Panama -AFUTPA- organized an emotional match of Panamanian soccer legends to commemorate one more year of the physical disappearance of the prominent soccer player Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez.
This event not only honored the memory of Fernández, the first Panamanian to triumph in Spanish soccer, but also Luis “El Matador” Tejada, all-time top scorer of the Panamanian national team, who died on January 28 of this year. The loss of Tejada has left a void impossible to fill in the soccer community, among his friends and family.
The match, which brought together great figures of Panamanian soccer, had a noble purpose: the funds raised through tickets were destined to the Friends of Children with Leukemia and Cancer Foundation -FANLYC-, thus demonstrating the power of sport to unite the community around charitable causes.
UMECIT was present at this great event, showing its support and commitment through the active participation of students from the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Health. Bachelor's students in Physical Education and Personal Training, Physiotherapy, Preschool, among other disciplines, contributed from their respective areas of specialization, providing assistance and demonstrating their commitment to the community.
This event not only honored the memory of two great figures of Panamanian sports, but also strengthened the ties between the university and the community, underscoring the importance of solidarity and mutual support. UMECIT is proud to have been part of this significant initiative, reaffirming its commitment to education, sports and social well-being.
