UMECIT at the II World Summit of Future Commissions 2023: Reflections on Future Democracy and Artificial Intelligence

As part of our mission and vision focused on the development of strategic alliances that contribute to impact at a national and international level, we announce the participation of the Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology -UMECIT- in the II World Summit of Future Commissions 2023 , held in Montevideo, Uruguay, from September 25 to 27.

This summit, jointly organized by the Parliament of Uruguay and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), represents a significant milestone in the global dialogue on anticipating future challenges in science-based decision-making.

This event brought together more than 300 parliamentarians from various nations, as well as representatives of the main technology companies, academia, experts in futures studies, specialized agencies and civil society.

The central theme of this edition, “Bringing the future to the present: future democracy, artificial intelligence and parliaments”, raised crucial questions about how emerging technologies, in particular artificial intelligence (AI), are shaping the future of democracy and parliamentary decision-making.

AI presents regulatory challenges and opportunities to increase the efficiency and accuracy of parliamentary processes. However, it also raises concerns about transparency, misinformation and privacy. During the summit, in-depth and nuanced discussions were fostered about AI and its impact on society and democracy.

UMECIT had the honor of being represented by our Rector, Dr. José Albert Nieto Rojas, the General Vice Rector, Claudia Marcela Rueda, and the Academic Vice Rector, Hermes Mauricio Sierra.

Additionally, this event served as a platform for the launch of the Office of the Future and the Public-Private Space Committee of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament.

During the dialogue tables, crucial topics were addressed, such as the transition to an AI future, anticipatory governance and the fundamental role of parliaments in the democracy of the future. This summit highlighted the need to adapt to technological and ethical changes to ensure sound, science-based decision making.

At UMECIT, we reaffirm our commitment to responsibility, sustainability, solidarity, research and innovation in decision-making. This participation in the II World Summit of Future Commissions 2023 is a testimony of our commitment to academic excellence and global dialogue on critical issues that affect society and democracy.
