As part of their commitment to training professionals capable of responding to environmental challenges, students of the Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Management Administration of UMECIT, Santiago campus, participated in the academic practice "Knowing and Conserving Marine Life: Turtles", developed in Mata Oscura Beach, Mariato district, Veraguas province, under the guidance of research teacher Maylyn Cáceres.

The day allowed students to strengthen their skills through conservation activities focused on protecting four threatened sea turtle species: Kemp's ridley, green, leatherback, and hawksbill. As part of the fieldwork, they assisted in moving sand and refurbishing the hatchery used for rescuing and protecting nests, contributing to improved conditions for the incubation and survival of these species.

During the practical session, participants expanded their knowledge of the evolutionary history of sea turtles, their importance to ecosystems, the processes of nesting, reproduction and incubation, as well as the main conservation strategies that seek to guarantee their preservation.

The research component of the activity allowed students to gather information on nesting processes, life cycle, incubation and hatching periods, as well as identify the main pollutants and predators affecting these species in the region. The data obtained were analyzed and systematized by the students as part of a scientific report, strengthening their skills in field research and environmental monitoring.

This experience integrated teaching, research, and environmental conservation, promoting meaningful learning that brings students closer to the real challenges of environmental management and strengthens their commitment to protecting biodiversity.

With initiatives like this, UMECIT reaffirms its commitment to education geared towards sustainability, training professionals capable of generating solutions for the conservation of natural heritage and the sustainable development of Panama.
