Field Day at Playa Mata Oscura: Integrating Sustainability and Mathematics
Last Saturday, March 16, the UMECIT university community joined the Mar y Tierra Foundation on a field trip to Mata Oscura beach, Mariato, Veraguas. This exciting initiative was led by the Santiago Campus researcher, Roberto Moreno, as part of his institutional research project «Contribution to the environmentalization of UMECIT: Case study for sustainability in the teaching of mathematics in the Bachelor's Degrees in Business Administration. Environmental Management and Occupational Health and Safety.
The main objective of the day was to significantly reduce pollution on Mata Oscura beach through garbage collection. In addition to cleaning the beach, the activity encouraged the active participation of the university and local community in environmental initiatives. It was also possible to apply mathematical concepts in real situations related to environmental management and occupational safety.
This unique experience not only reaffirms UMECIT's commitment to the environment, but also expands the understanding of how mathematics is applied in the context of sustainability and workplace safety. In addition, the event made it possible to link students who are part of the research hotbed of the Headquarters, thus strengthening the institution's commitment to the comprehensive training of its students.
This field tour is a clear example of UMECIT's interdisciplinary approach to addressing environmental challenges and promoting a culture of sustainability in its academic community and in society at large.
