Day of the Dead: a Mexican tradition that transcends borders and arrives at UMECIT

Our university fosters spaces for cultural exchange that allow its university community to learn about other traditions, understand their meanings, and recognize the diversity of expressions that enrich the identity of peoples.

In this context, the cultural discussion "Day of the Dead: an increasingly global celebration" will take place, an initiative that seeks to bring the university community closer to one of the most representative traditions of Mexico, recognized for its altars, offerings and symbolic expressions linked to memory and family ties.

The event will feature the participation of Mario Beltrán, Head of Cultural Affairs and International Cooperation at the Mexican Embassy in Panama, and Geynar Delgado, Attaché for Political and Media Affairs at the Mexican Embassy, also in Panama. Their participation will allow for a deeper understanding of the meaning of this tradition and how its expressions have transcended borders, maintaining a connection with Mexican history, identity, and customs.

As part of this cultural experience, a commemorative altar will be set up in the Founders Building. This space will allow the university community to learn more about some of the characteristic elements of the Day of the Dead and understand its meaning. Those who wish may voluntarily place a photograph of a special person on the altar as a personal expression of remembrance and affection.

Beyond its visual elements, the Day of the Dead represents a cultural expression that transmits knowledge, preserves customs, and strengthens ties to family and collective memory. Engaging with this tradition offers an opportunity to broaden our understanding of other cultures and appreciate the diverse ways in which communities keep their histories alive.

The initiative is part of the actions of the University Welfare Program, through the Folklore and Culture Axis, aimed at promoting cultural learning experiences, respect for diversity and participation of the university community.
