On March 21, UMECIT joined the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, a significant date that reminds us of the importance of promoting equality and inclusion in all communities.
This day has its roots in a tragic event that occurred in 1960 in Sharpeville, South Africa, where police shot peaceful demonstrators protesting against the unjust laws of apartheid, leaving 69 people dead. Since then, the United Nations General Assembly has called for redoubled efforts to eradicate all forms of racial discrimination.
At a time when we face a worrying rise in xenophobia, racism and intolerance, it is essential to unite in the fight against discrimination. The #FightRacism campaign, launched by the United Nations Office for Human Rights, seeks to promote a global culture of tolerance and equality.
This year, the #FightRacism campaign highlights the role of global figures fighting discrimination in sport, in collaboration with the Euroleague basketball, to convey a message of unity and solidarity.
March 21 also gives us the opportunity to reflect on the International Decade for People of African Descent, a group that faces significant challenges in terms of access to education, healthcare, housing and social security. In this context, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, will present the results of the critical mid-term review before the Human Rights Council.
At UMECIT, we reaffirm our commitment to equality and diversity, and we commit to continue working to build a world where everyone can live free of discrimination and prejudice.
Join us in this important cause and together #FightRacism.
