On November 27, 2024, within the framework of the Commemoration of the International Day of Non-Violence against Women, the Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology -UMECIT- participated in a discussion organized by the Ministry of Women, focused on analyzing the impact of domestic violence in Panamanian society.
During the event, the book “Fuga por Mi Vida” was launched by author Thalía Velásquez, who shared her inspiring experience as a survivor of domestic violence, highlighting the power of resilience and the importance of making this problem visible.
Master Yelitza González, Director of Outreach, attended on behalf of UMECIT, providing academic perspectives and proposals aimed at preventing violence against women. The University presented recent research related to this topic and addressed educational strategies to raise awareness among both the university community and the general public about the need to eradicate gender violence.
The Minister for Women, Her Excellency Niurka Palacio, accompanied by the Secretary General, Mirthia Borissoff, stressed the importance of collaboration between universities and the State in the fight against violence against women. She highlighted UMECIT as an example of an educational institution that takes an active role in building a more equitable society.
UMECIT reaffirms its commitment to gender equality, the promotion of social well-being, and the strengthening of initiatives that transform the reality of Panama, consolidating its mission as an agent of change and sustainable development.
