UMECIT actively participated in the national consultation process for the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) in Panama, contributing from academia to the generation of spaces for analysis, dialogue and collective construction.
This process, framed within the country's commitment to the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, is led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the support of the United Nations Migration Network and the IOM in Panama, and the support of the European Union, developing under a pan-governmental and pan-social approach.
The consultation sessions were held in different provinces of the country, including Panama, Chiriquí, Colón and Herrera, also covering Coclé and Los Santos, bringing together actors from the public, private, academic sectors and representatives of the migrant diaspora, with the aim of building a shared vision towards more inclusive, humane and sustainable policies.
On behalf of the institution, Master Emanuel Mendieta, coordinator of graduates, actively participated in these spaces, contributing the academic and social vision of UMECIT in the construction of proposals aimed at the well-being of the migrant population.
For UMECIT, participation in these spaces is fundamental, as it contributes to the preparation of country reports and the strengthening of public policies that directly impact the quality of life of the population, demonstrating the role of the university as an agent of knowledge generation and social development.
During the process, progress, challenges and good practices in migration management were identified, highlighting the importance of adopting comprehensive approaches that promote regularization, social inclusion and access to rights.
Among the contributions made by UMECIT, the implementation of concrete actions aimed at the inclusion of the migrant population was highlighted, such as access to legal guidance through legal clinics, the promotion of labor insertion through job exchange programs, the development of professional internships as a graduation option and the promotion of entrepreneurship as a way of economic autonomy.
Also highlighted was the impact of community initiatives such as health fairs, volunteer programs like "Hands that Transform," and solidarity actions that strengthen social integration.
Finally, UMECIT reaffirms its commitment as a diverse and intercultural academic community, promoting respect, inclusion and active participation of students, graduates and collaborators of different nationalities, contributing to sustainable development and the building of a more equitable society.
