UMECIT hosted a discussion on migrant women and education

UMECIT promotes inclusion from the academic world: migrant women, higher education, and employment at the center of the debate

The past June 25, the Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology (UMECIT) hosted the discussion “Challenges and Opportunities for Migrant Women in Higher Education and Employment”, an activity organized by the University Social Responsibility Commission (RSU) of the Council of Rectors of Panama, led by the Master Yelitza González Zamorano, UMECIT Extension Director and coordinator of the commission.

The event, which took place in the Founders Hall, was hosted by the Master Alfredo Mitre and began with the words of Dr. Jose Alberto Nieto Rojas, Rector of UMECIT, who highlighted the role of higher education as a driver of social transformation. He also emphasized that Panama is a country that has historically provided opportunities without distinction, and reaffirmed the institutional commitment to building inclusive and equitable spaces.

Magister González provided a background on the objectives of the activity, which is framed within the Council of Rectors' CSR policies, and highlighted its importance in generating concrete proposals from the educational field.

The panel of experts It was made up of:

  • 👥 Mr. Jonathan Santana, representing the Ombudsman, Mr. Eduardo Leblanc.

  • 👥 Lic. Idiam Osorio, International Organization for Migration – IOM.

  • 👥 Lic. Zuleika Jaramillo, Immigration Directorate.

  • 👥 Ms. Marquelda Coronado, Ministry of Women.

Moderation was in charge of Mgtr. Raúl López Andrea (Columbus) and the Mgtr. Leidy Pérez Rugeles (ISAE University).

During the day, the obstacles migrant women face in accessing higher education and decent employment were discussed, as well as the actions needed to guarantee their rights and promote integration.
