Inter-institutional ties are strengthened to promote research in Chitré

The past January 27, 2025, a key meeting was held between the Eng. Juan Carlos Huertas, Mayor of the Municipality of Chitré, and the authorities of the Research and Innovation Department of our university. This meeting marked an important step towards consolidating initiatives that promote social and environmental development in the region.

The Dr. Magdy De Las Salas, National Director of Research, highlighted the institutional commitment to direct research efforts towards solutions that directly impact the community. For its part, the Mgter. Anielka U. de Samaniego, Research Coordinator at the UMECIT Chitré Headquarters, highlighted the need to scientifically address priority issues such as:

  • Landfill management and the development of green cities
  • Conservation and sustainable management of water
  • Problems related to local fauna
  • Support for the elderly population
  • Environmental education

In this task, the university has the support of the Science and Technology Unit (UCYT), attached to the Research Center, which provides advice at each stage of the investigative process, from data collection to the dissemination of results.

This meeting reaffirmed the mutual interest in strengthening the ties established through the existing inter-institutional agreement and advancing research projects with social relevance, which provide solutions to the region's problems.

We thank the Mayor of the Chitre District, Eng. Juan Carlos Huertas, for their willingness and commitment to building a more sustainable future for the Chitré region.
