Academic practice in Alto Ortiga: empowerment and prevention of gender violence

The group of students from the Bachelor's Degree in Social Work and Human Development at the Santiago Campus, under the coordination of Professor Yazmin Díaz, carried out an academic internship in the community of Alto Ortiga, Santa Fe, Veraguas. This activity focused on awareness and education workshops aimed at women in the community, with the aim of raising awareness about their rights and the importance of preventing gender violence.

Among the activities carried out, the workshop on human rights and women's rights stands out, information sessions on the types of gender violence and its consequences, and talks on the importance of self-esteem and personal empowerment. These activities aimed to raise awareness among women in the community about their rights and the importance of preventing gender violence.

In addition, skills and empowerment training was carried out, with the aim of strengthening women's personal and professional skills to improve their self-confidence and decision-making ability. Activities included personal development and leadership workshops, training in job skills and entrepreneurship, and mentoring and emotional support sessions, coordinated with the Sisters of the shelter in the Alto Ortiga community.

These activities helped promote a culture of gender equality and mutual respect within the community, educating and raising awareness among women about their rights and the importance of healthy relationships. Training women strengthens their self-esteem and ability to make informed decisions, allowing them to face situations of gender violence with greater confidence and seek support when they need it.

The results of this activity were presented in a discussion held by the students, where they presented the findings of their research titled "Prevention of Gender Violence in the Population of Alto Ortiga Guabal." This conversation allowed us to share the experiences and positive impacts of the intervention, highlighting the importance of continuing to work on the prevention of gender violence and the empowerment of women in all communities.

UMECIT University is proud of the commitment and dedication demonstrated by its students, who not only acquire theoretical knowledge, but also apply it practically to benefit the communities.
