Umecit – University in Panama

Let's strengthen ties with the Ministry of Environment to promote sustainable research.

With the firm objective of strengthening the strategic collaboration between the Ministry of the Environment of Panama (MIAMBIENTE) and UMECIT, an important meeting was held between the Minister of the Environment, His Excellency Juan Carlos Navarro, the Rector, Dr. José Alberto Nieto, and Dr. Magdy De las Salas, Director of Research and Innovation at UMECIT.

Within the framework of the institutional research development plan and following a diagnostic consultation with key stakeholders in the country's provinces, research projects aligned with national sustainability objectives were defined. These projects seek to generate significant contributions to relevant social engagement.

During the meeting, which took place at the MIAMBIENTE facilities, Minister Navarro expressed his support for these initiatives, highlighting their potential to generate valuable data that contributes to understanding environmental issues and to decision-making based on scientific evidence.

For UMECIT, this partnership represents a valuable opportunity for the development of applied research that will positively impact the provinces where the university operates. These projects will involve professors, researchers, and students committed to sustainability.

The initiatives cover diverse areas, including the social impact of wastewater, environmental crimes, environmental education, solid waste management, and urban ecosystem management, among other relevant topics.

The successful implementation of these projects seeks to generate tangible results in the communities involved, demonstrating that the collaborative work between UMECIT and the Ministry of Environment is key to moving toward a more sustainable Panama.

Also present at the meeting were MIAMBIENTE staff and Dr. Alejandro Watson, legal advisor.
