Virtual Forum: “Chronology of the Search for Gender Equality in Panama” in commemoration of Social Work Day

On Wednesday, September 4, the virtual forum entitled «Chronology of the Search for Gender Equality in Panama», as part of the commemoration of the Social Work DayThis event was organized by students of the 9th semester of the Social Work and Human Development degree, who addressed key topics such as the main leaders and influential figures in the women's rights movement, current challenges, and legislation and public policies focused on gender equality.

Among the prominent figures, names such as Clara Gonzalez and Gladys Miller, Social Worker, who have left a significant mark in the fight for women's rights in Panama. Issues such as gaps in education and digital gaps were also addressed, and emphasis was placed on the ratification of the Convention 190 of the International Labour Organization (ILO), which seeks to prevent gender violence in the workplace.

The forum began with a historical analysis of the main milestones in the evolution of women's rights in Panama, from the achievement of the right to vote in 1941 to the most recent ratification of Convention 190. The presentations highlighted the progress made in women's political participation, although gaps persist in terms of representation in leadership positions, decision-making and equal pay.

In addition, the crucial role of feminist movements in conjunction with social work in promoting equitable public policies was explored, mentioning important achievements such as the creation of the National Institute for Women (INAMU) in 1997 and the recent establishment of the Ministry of Women through the Law 375 of March 8, 2023.

It is important to note that this forum was based on qualitative research conducted by students, who analyzed historical and current events related to the topic of gender equality in Panama.
