The past Saturday, March 29, the students of 7th quarter of the race of Occupational Safety and Health participated in a field trip in the Ancón Fire Station, as part of the subject “Fires and Hazardous Materials”, under the direction of the teacher Christian Oscar Toribio Vásquez.
This activity had the objective of Strengthen knowledge about the use of fire extinguishers and the generalities of hazardous substances in the workplace, giving students the opportunity to apply what they learned in class in a real-life setting. In addition, participants interacted with professionals in charge of the emergency prevention and response, who shared their experience in fire management and handling of hazardous materials.
It should be noted that this activity was carried out within the framework of the interinstitutional agreement between the university and the Fire brigade, which facilitates access to practical training spaces essential for the professional development of future occupational health and safety specialists.
During the day, the students carried out practical exercises in handling fire extinguishers, identification and safe handling of hazardous substances and analyzed prevention and response protocols against fires. Likewise, the importance of current fire protection regulations, both nationally and internationally, was reinforced.
This field trip integrates the three substantive functions of higher education:
Teaching: Application of knowledge in a practical environment.
Research: Observation and analysis of emergency protocols used by firefighters.
Extension: Link with a key institution in safety and fire prevention.
