As part of the research entitled “Development of an occupational health and safety program for rice planting and cultivation activities in the Mariato district”The second day of fieldwork was carried out in the community of Arena de Quebro, where two farms in the region were visited.
The central objective of this research is to identify the hazards present during agricultural work involving rice planting and cultivation, in order to design a program to prevent occupational accidents and illnesses, thereby protecting the health of workers in the sector.
During the visit, students from the Occupational Health and Safety program at the Santiago campus, accompanied by Professor Ericka Cruz, principal investigator, closely observed the process of land preparation and rice planting, identifying risks such as moving machinery, unstable terrain, and inadequate use of personal protective equipment.
In addition, discussions were held with collaborators, who were informed of the purpose of the research and surveyed to determine their level of awareness regarding occupational health and safety issues. The fumigation process was also witnessed, where risks related to the handling of chemicals and the specific conditions of the field were identified.
This fieldwork constitutes a key step in the advancement of the research, as it allows for comparing the realities of different farms, enhancing risk assessments, and strengthening students' practical training. At the same time, it reaffirms UMECIT's commitment to promoting safer and healthier work environments in agricultural communities.
