The research team from UMECIT, Chitré Headquarters, completed the phase of applying scientific instruments and collecting data in the communities of El Retén and Playa El Agallito, Herrera province.

The Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology -UMECIT-, Chitré Campus, successfully completed the field work phase of the research project entitled “Impacts of the socio-environmental activities of the communities of Retén and El Agallito on the conservation of the migratory bird route”.

The research days began on September 8 in the El Retén sector and later continued in the coastal area of Playa El Agallito, where the team developed different activities aimed at collecting scientific information.

During fieldwork, environmental assessments, interviews with key stakeholders, and structured surveys of community residents were conducted to understand the socio-environmental and economic dynamics of these populations and their relationship with habitats that serve as seasonal refuges and stopover points for shorebirds and migratory birds.

The project is now entering a new phase: processing, tabulating, and methodologically analyzing the collected data. This information will allow progress toward formulating proposals and conservation strategies based on scientific evidence, seeking to integrate the well-being of communities with the protection of local biodiversity.

The research team and the authorities of UMECIT Chitré Headquarters thanked the community leaders, authorities of the province of Herrera and, especially, the residents of El Retén and Playa El Agallito for their willingness, knowledge of the territory and collaboration during the development of the field days.
