Uniting generations: students and senior citizens from the Golden Age Project share a day of social engagement

Students from the Bachelor's Degree in Social Work and Psychology at UMECIT, La Chorrera campus, participated in an exciting day of social engagement at the El Taller del Maestro nursing home, where they shared with elderly residents of this institution.

During the event, participants brought various donations for the more than 34 elderly men residing at the nursing home. Among the items donated were diapers, wipes, medications, personal hygiene products, clothing, and a small treat prepared especially for them.

Throughout the day, the students and the Golden Age Project group participated in recreational and social activities that fostered moments of joy, empathy, and companionship. The residents shared conversation, smiles, and affection in an experience that was much more than a visit: a reminder that they are not alone and that there are young people committed to providing them with support and companionship.

This experience also proved to be a valuable learning opportunity for the students, who reinforced values such as solidarity, respect for human dignity, and the importance of listening to and supporting those most in need. Activities like this strengthen the professional and personal development of future psychologists and social workers, reminding them that their work is built both in the classroom and through direct contact with social realities.

The activity was attended by Social Work students accompanied by their professor, Sandra Fernández, as well as Psychology students with their professor, Dr. Samira Franco. Also present were the women's group from the UMECIT Golden Age Project, led by Professor Brenda Moreno, the coordinator of the Psychological Counseling Center, Víctor Tejada, and student interns.

The Casa Hogar El Taller del Maestro faces various needs, so initiatives like this also seek to raise awareness in the community about the importance of supporting older adults, who deserve to live with dignity, care and affection.

Serving others not only transforms the lives of those who receive support, but also the lives of those who have the opportunity to give their time, their listening ear, and their heart.
