UMECIT strengthens applied research in the agricultural sector in Veraguas

Within the framework of its commitment to scientific research and social transformation, UMECIT University, through its teaching Ericka Cruz of the Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health from the headquarters of Santiago, carried out a valuable day of fieldwork in the district of Mariato, province of Veraguas.

The activity is part of the research project entitled “Development of an occupational health and safety program for rice planting and cultivation activities in the Mariato district”, whose objective is identify the hazards associated with agricultural work and design preventive strategies that guarantee safe and healthy working environments for farm workers.

During the visit, Professor Cruz met with local producers and witnessed two critical phases of the agricultural cycle: the sowing and the fertilizationIn the first stage, interviews were conducted with producers and surveys were administered to employees to assess their level of knowledge about occupational health and safety. During the fertilization stage, contact was established with the farm manager and the workers on duty, and data collection continued through observation and surveys.

This type of research allows generate practical and contextualized proposals that contribute to strengthening the culture of prevention in the agricultural sector, improving working conditions and promoting the well-being of those engaged in this essential task for the country's development.
