UMECIT celebrates 10 years of recognizing female leadership with the Cecilia Rojas de Nieto Award 2026

In the context of International Women's Day, UMECIT proudly celebrated the 10th edition of the Cecilia Rojas de Nieto Award 2026, consolidating a decade of recognition of the leadership, resilience and impact of women in Panamanian society.

This significant event, named after an exemplary woman and the mother of our rector, symbolizes a legacy of effort, values, and social transformation, highlighting women who inspire, lead, and generate change in different areas.

The opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Claudia Marcela Rueda, Vice-Rector, who emphasized the importance of leadership characterized by sensitivity and a commitment to service. During the event, a keynote address was given by María Inés Castillo de Sanmartín, former Minister of Social Development of Panama and former President of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM-OAS), who offered valuable insights on the role of women in social transformation.

The discussion with the award recipients was moderated by Dr. María Piedad Nieto, Vice-Rector of Administration, creating a close and inspiring space for dialogue. The event concluded with closing remarks from Ms. Yelitza González Zamorano, Director of Extension and Community Engagement, who emphasized the role of education as a driver of equity and development.

In this edition, the award ceremony was held at the Panama City Center and La Chorrera venues, expanding the recognition of the impact of women in different territories of the country.
