UMECIT Chitré Headquarters participated in the launch of the 2026 Marine Turtle Work Plan, an event organized by the Ministry of Environment of Panama, which brought together key actors from the Azuero region with the aim of strengthening actions for the protection, conservation and sustainable management of marine turtles in coastal communities of the Panamanian Pacific and Caribbean.
This initiative seeks to strengthen conservation strategies on the country's main nesting beaches, through comprehensive actions of monitoring, control and surveillance, environmental education and capacity building in the communities.
For the Research and Innovation Directorate of UMECIT, participation in these types of spaces is fundamental, since it allows establishing links with the actors that promote regional development, identifying research needs and strengthening both institutional and formative research.
The goal is for the scientific output generated by the university to have a real social impact, responding to the needs of the surrounding community. By identifying problems in the environment, the university contributes to building a database of problems that guides decision-making and the management of institutional research.
