As part of the commemoration of International Women's Day, the Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology -UMECIT-, La Chorrera campus, developed a sensitization and awareness training in coordination with the Ministry of Women of Panama and the UMECIT Psychological Clinic.
The activity, which was mainly aimed at Psychology students and the general public, was given by social worker Elizabeth Villareal, who addressed the historical, social and cultural origin of International Women's Day, as well as the social movements that have driven the fight for rights and gender equality.
During the training, participants reflected on the importance of promoting equality, preventing violence against women, and strengthening the role of mental health professionals in supporting vulnerable populations.
The workshop employed a participatory methodology that fostered dialogue and critical reflection among participants, enabling an analysis of the relationship between gender inequality, mental health, and contemporary social contexts. Institutional protection mechanisms and the importance of promoting educational processes that cultivate a culture of respect, equity, and social justice were also addressed.
The planning involved an institutional coordination process that allowed the articulation of efforts between the University and the Ministry, with the support of Licda. María de la Cruz, coordinator of the CAI, who facilitated the link for the participation of the trainer.
With these types of initiatives, UMECIT reaffirms its commitment to the comprehensive education of its students and to the promotion of spaces for awareness and action that contribute to building a more conscious, equitable and inclusive society.
