Career Description

Students of the Bachelor's Degree in Social Communication, Journalism and Digital Media will benefit from an academic program that integrates the fundamentals of traditional journalism with the skills necessary to work in today's digital environment. The objective of this degree is to train professionals and leaders trained to investigate, collect, produce and disseminate information in an ethical and responsible manner through traditional media and new communication trends, with the purpose of entertaining, educating and informing.

Throughout the degree, students acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge in various fields, including corporate communication, digital content production, journalism, design, and multimedia editing, among others. You can work as a journalist in both traditional media such as; newspapers, magazines, radio or television, as well as, you can explore opportunities in the growing digital journalism market, which with the rise of the Internet and social networks, there is a growing search for professionals who can create journalistic content for digital platforms, such as news websites, blogs and social media.

In our country, it is common for a graduate in journalism to be considered qualified to run public relations offices in both government entities and the business and educational sectors.

A graduate of this career can work as a copywriter or editor in advertising agencies, public relations firms, publishers, and other media outlets. This involves writing and editing content for different formats, such as articles, reports, press releases, speeches, among others.

Corporate communication: Many companies hire communication graduates to manage their internal and external communication strategies. You can work in departments of corporate communication, public relations, internal communication, crisis communication and reputation management.

All applicants must submit the following documentation duly scanned from the original and sent to the promoter to be uploaded to the respective platform:  

  • High school diploma or its equivalent 
  • High school credits or grades or their equivalent
  • Identity document, identity card or passport in case of foreigners and residing in Panama during their studies (In case the student is a minor, the juvenile identity card and the identity document of his/her guardian).
  • A current passport-size photo  
  • Fill out the admission form in electronic format with the promoter

 If you are a foreigner, the documents such as the High School Diploma or its equivalent, the credits or high school grades or its equivalent must be apostilled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of your respective country. In the event that the country does not have a consulate, it must carry out a procedure before the official authorities that validate it).

  • The permanence in the University will depend solely and exclusively on the student's motivation, capacity and vision to obtain the chosen academic degree.
  • Respect and comply with the regulations established by the statutes that regulate the relationship between the Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology and the students of the Institution, taking into account the principles and values of the human being.
  • Keep payments up to date.
  • Attend at least 80% of scheduled meetings in face-to-face and semi face-to-face mode. In case of prolonged absence, you must duly present the argumentation that justifies it. 
  • For studies under the virtual modality, attendance is regulated by constant interaction in all activities planned on the platform, including synchronous and asynchronous meetings, as well as the development of the student's autonomous work.
  • The student is responsible for the construction of their knowledge, willingness to work and collaborative learning, study in a team on their own, investigate, be self-taught and contribute to self-knowledge and self-motivation. 
  • For those students who lose academic continuity (i.e. defer or withdraw) and wish to continue their studies or did not fulfill their degree requirement, they must apply for reinstatement to the current program approved by CTDA and must comply with the validation and homologation regulations.  
  • The term of stay at the University will be in accordance with the number of quarters that make up the academic program and compliance with degree requirements.
  • The student in cases of force majeure or fortuitous event must submit to the contingency plans or document that takes its place. 

Index 

  • Maintain a cumulative academic index of not less than one (1.0) on a scale of one to three (1 to 3).

Note 

To pass each subject, the participant must obtain a minimum grade of 71 on a scale from 1 to 100 which is equivalent to literal C.

To obtain the Technician Title, the following is required:

 

  • Maintain a cumulative academic index of not less than one (1.0) on a scale of one to three (1 to 3).

  • Be in good standing with the institution (financial, academic, and library).

 

To obtain the Bachelor's Degree, the following is required:

 

  • Take and pass all the subjects of the study plan with a minimum grade of 71 points equivalent to a C. 
  • Maintain a cumulative academic index of not less than one (1.0) on a scale of one to three (1 to 3).
  • Present and pass the English test.
  • Be in good standing with the institution (financial, academic, and library).
  • Consolidate an academic portfolio in which the products elaborated in workshops 1 to 10 are integrated, in such a way that there is evidence of their learning process throughout the degree, at the same time that it becomes a portfolio of their productions that are useful in working life. Final degree project: 

 

Complete and approve one of the following requirements: 

 

  • Prepare, support and approve a project (degree work) in their area of knowledge.
  • Take postgraduate courses
  • pass knowledge test 

 

In the case of foreign students, they must comply with the local regulations of the country of origin where they want to validate their degree.

Technician Profile

The graduate of the technical program acquires the necessary skills to support the work of communication and journalism in the new digital media, based on knowledge of current platforms and new narratives, characterized by the proper handling of oral, written and body language, as well to adequately apply the tools, technologies and principles involved in the Production and Realization of new media and digital formats.

  • Identify the main concepts and foundations of social communication and journalism that allow you to carry out support tasks and development of communication products in different media and formats
  • Determine the possibilities offered by the image, advertising and photography in the development of communication processes of pieces aimed at traditional media, new media and digital formats. 
  • Reflect on the importance assumed by communication theories and the sociology of communication for the development of their professional work in different work settings
  • Recognize the norms, principles and guidelines associated with media law and legislation

  • Develop marketing strategies and social networks for narrative projects in accordance with the communication principles, characteristics of the audiences and the different platforms
  • Apply the principles of oral, written and corporal communication in the creation of pieces for different media and formats 
  • Carry out the real and practical production of communicative, informative or new media pieces in which the appropriation of the basic concepts and procedures of social communication and journalism is evidenced.

  • Make creative and innovative proposals in the face of changes in the communication pieces, evidencing adequate emotional management 
  • Actively participate in the creation of communication products, evidencing attitudes of good treatment and collaborative work

  • Demonstrates calm and reflection when faced with problems or conflictive situations, providing alternative solutions or other perspectives 
  • Express empathy and support for others through their verbal and non-verbal language to improve academic and coexistence processes

The graduate acquires the technical, human, analytical, and ethical competencies to perform in all professional fields that involve practicing social communication with an emphasis on journalism and content construction and New Media. Likewise, our professional is able to recognize and develop all types of analysis from communication, journalism, strategy, relationship and social networks, to exercise a holistic, modern role and according to the social and business needs of Panama and the world.
