Academic Tour to Barro Colorado Island – Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Management Administration

On August 10, 2025, students from the General Ecology group of the Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Management took an enriching academic trip to Barro Colorado Island, accompanied by Professor Elvis Yoel Franceschi López.

The activity, organized with the support of staff from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), allowed participants to gain significant insights into the biodiversity and ecological processes occurring at this globally important scientific site.

During the day, the students took a guided tour of the island's main trails, analyzing concepts of ecological niche, habitat, food chains and webs, nutrient succession, and cycles. They observed species such as howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, snakes, birds, spiders, amphibians, and frog egg masses, highlighting their importance in the balance of the ecosystem.

The experience included a question-and-answer session, discussions about the importance of the observed flora and fauna, and the screening of a video about the island's history and scientific impact.

Student participation was active and proactive, strengthening the connection between the theory taught in the classroom and field practice. Each student will subsequently develop a report as the basis for a scientific article, thus consolidating their research training.

With activities like this, UMECIT reaffirms its commitment to experiential learning, research, and the training of environmentally conscious professionals.
