Umecit – University in Panama

We are strengthening ties with the Hortensio De Icaza Public Library in La Chorrera

Within the framework of strengthening cooperation between educational and cultural institutions in the district of La Chorrera, UMECIT made a courtesy visit to the Hortensio De Icaza Public Library, with the aim of coordinating future academic, cultural and training activities that promote the exchange of knowledge and the connection with the community.

This approach is developed within the framework of the existing agreement between our University and the Mayor's Office of La Chorrera, aimed at promoting joint initiatives that strengthen academic training, culture and community participation.

During the meeting, various proposals for collaborative work were discussed, including the organization of reading clubs, training in library science, and spaces for the exchange of experiences between library staff and the university community.

The Hortensio De Icaza Public Library, founded in 1972 and recently remodeled, has spaces for workshops, conferences and cultural activities, as well as a valuable newspaper archive with historical and cultural publications from La Chorrera and the province of Panama Oeste.

As a result of this meeting, a workshop on the creation of artisanal pineapples was coordinated for entrepreneurs from UMECIT, as well as the planning of new joint activities that will strengthen cooperation between both institutions.

Representing the University were Licda. Diana Neira, in charge of the UMECIT library, and the Extension Coordinator, Mgtr. Alexis Del Cid, who were received by Prof. Luzmila Ayala and Prof. Ricardo Sanjur, librarian of the institution.

This approach represents an important step in consolidating an alliance that promotes education, culture, research, and community development, reaffirming UMECIT's commitment to social engagement and collaborative work for the benefit of La Chorrera and West Panama.
