The Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology -UMECIT- developed the academic forum “Mining: Legal and Social Approach”, organized by Mgtr. María Averola from the subject Agrarian and Mining Law.
The space featured the participation of an external speaker from the company Copper Panama, who shared with the students the company's experience in the copper extraction process in the country, also addressing the technical, legal, environmental, and social aspects surrounding this industry.
The main objectives of the forum included:
The workshop allowed students to understand the complexity of mining in Panama, not only from a technical perspective, but also from a legal, environmental, and social perspective. It was emphasized that, although mining represents a significant source of income for the country, it also requires a firm commitment to sustainability, community protection, and strict compliance with current regulations.
This experience reaffirms the importance of interdisciplinary training in Law, which trains future professionals to analyze and propose solutions that integrate economic development with social well-being and environmental care.
This event was made possible thanks to the linking the Extension Coordination (Continuing Education and Internationalization) with Academic Coordination.
