On March 22, 2025, students of the Bachelor's Degree in Social Work and Human Development at UMECIT, Veneto campus, made an academic tour to the shelter Sisters of Charity Teresa of Calcutta, located in the province of Colón. The activity was guided by the teachers Rocío Jiménez and Jorge Argueta, and its purpose was to strengthen the practical training of future professionals in the social field.
During the visit, the students carried out coexistence workshops, dynamics and games aimed at the shelter's seniors, promoting emotional well-being and strengthening intergenerational ties. They also offered a motivational reflection, encouraging empathy and respect towards this population.
In addition, they carried out a indirect observation with the goal of applying technical tools for social diagnosis. From this experience, students will be able to develop improvement proposals that contribute to the shelter's mission and the quality of life of its residents.
These types of activities reinforce the ethical and social commitment of future social workers, providing them with a critical and responsible approach to the needs of vulnerable populations. They also promote the development of skills in research, innovation and entrepreneurship, challenging them to apply analytical methodologies and formulate creative solutions.
The academic tour not only strengthened the students' theoretical and practical learning, but also made them aware of the importance of global citizenship, encouraging them to be agents of change in building more inclusive and just societies.
