Occupational Health and Safety students take an academic tour to Minera Cobre

Last Sunday, March 24, students from the Occupational Health and Safety program at UMECIT conducted an academic field trip to Minera Cobre to learn about and analyze the safety processes implemented in the various areas of the mining operation.

During the tour, the importance of safety protocols in the interaction between workers and machinery was emphasized, highlighting strict compliance with occupational risk prevention regulations, the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and access control strategies in high-risk areas.

Students were able to closely observe safety management within the mine, including heavy machinery inspection and maintenance procedures, signage of critical areas, and internal communication systems for risk reduction. They also discussed key strategies in occupational health and safety management, such as risk identification and assessment, emergency drill planning, and handling of hazardous substances.

This academic experience strengthened the training of future professionals in the field, providing them with the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom to a real-life work environment. The visit to Minera Cobre not only allowed them to understand the importance of a well-structured safety culture, but also demonstrated the fundamental role of ongoing training in preventing occupational accidents and illnesses in the mining sector.
