CONVERSATION: WATER CRISIS IN AZUERO

A few days ago, the Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology (UMECIT), Chitré Campus, was invited to participate in the discussion “Water Crisis in Azuero”, organized by the Panamanian Association of Business Executives (APEDE), Azuero chapter.

During the event, our researchers Osvaldo Solís and César Tovar expressed their concern about the alarming pollution of the La Villa River, highlighting the importance of addressing the issue on multiple fronts to mitigate environmental damage.

Among the contributions presented by UMECIT, the following were proposed:

  • Reforestation of the Upper Basin of the La Villa River

  • Apply cleaner production techniques on pig and cattle farms

  • Incorporating agroforestry systems into agricultural production

  • Strengthen environmental education from the school level

These contributions reflect the university's commitment to its social context, environmental sustainability, and responsible development. UMECIT thus reaffirms its role as an institution generating solutions and knowledge at the service of communities.
