Human Rights outreach activity focused on the social responsibility of Panamanian children and adolescents

Our House of Studies carried out the extension activity “Human Rights Oriented toward the Social Responsibility of Children and Adolescents in Panama: Safeguarding the Future”, with the aim of promoting the prevention of vulnerability and strengthening knowledge about the fundamental rights and guarantees of this population group.

During the analysis phase, it was identified that in many communities there is a marked lack of awareness about the fundamental rights of children and adolescents, as well as limited access to legal guidance in cases of violations. Given this situation, UMECIT recognized the need to create spaces for guidance, training, and prevention, both for the community and for law and forensics students, who require practical experiences that will prepare them as professionals with social responsibility and community commitment.

The workshop included teaching and learning processes, opportunities for analysis of the main causes of rights violations—such as violence, abuse, and exploitation—and the development of strategies to prevent and address these problems through legal and forensic science.

The satisfaction evaluation reflected a highly positive response from both students and the participating community, who enthusiastically valued the knowledge and tools shared.

The activity also demonstrated the integration of UMECIT's substantive functions:

  • Teaching: Practical training in the teaching process related to social issues in Law and Criminology.

  • Research: The workshop analyzed how social responsibility and respect for human rights are fundamental to protecting children and adolescents in the community. The workshop will focus on the main causes of rights violations, such as violence, abuse, and exploitation, and how law and forensics can intervene to prevent and address these cases.
  • Extension: Dissemination of technical knowledge, workshops, educational campaigns, and community legal workshops can be held to inform and prevent violations of the rights of children and adolescents.
  • ManagementDevelop joint projects for the prevention and protection of children's rights. Resources, institutional support, and spaces for educational, legal, and community activities can also be obtained, strengthening the social impact of university work in criminalistics and law.
