Career Description

The purpose of the Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health is the development of guidelines for a safe work environment, promoting and protecting the health of workers by reducing risk conditions. Among the activities that lead to achieving this purpose are competencies such as:
  • Research
  • Prevention of accidents and occupational diseases
  • Industrial hygiene
  • Risk analysis processes
  • Identification of physical, chemical, biological, psychological, environmental and social elements and factors that affect the integrity of workers.
Similarly, within the program in Occupational Safety and Health proposed by the Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology, it seeks to provide an education within the framework of the full development of the person, highlighting and instilling respect for values, fundamental rights and public freedoms, thus promoting an ethical sense of the student and professional in each of their actions. That is, to train a professional who provides health services with high human quality and ethical service, ensuring a high degree of mental, social and physical well-being for workers.

Consequently, it makes it possible to foresee problems related to occupational safety. Additionally, the Bachelor of Occupational Health also contributes and is part of areas related to industrial hygiene, integrated management systems and risk management, in different economic sectors such as: companies in the productive sector, public and private organizations, industrial plants, construction companies, insurance companies, environmental organizations, recreation places, educational establishments, hospitals, among others.

All applicants must submit the following documentation duly scanned from the original and sent to the promoter to be uploaded to the respective platform:  

  • High school diploma in science or its equivalent.
  • Credits or grades of baccalaureate in sciences.

If you are a foreigner, the above mentioned documents must be apostilled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of your respective country. In the event that the country does not have a consulate, you will have to go through the official authorities to validate it).

  • Identity document, identity card or passport in case of foreigners and residing in Panama during their studies (In case the student is a minor, the juvenile identity card and the identity document of his/her guardian).
  • A current passport-size photo  
  • Fill out the admission form in electronic format with the promoter. 

Note: Students enrolled in virtual modality whose nationality is different from Panamanian, must present a copy of their personal identity document from the country of origin (ID or the one that takes its place). 

In case of not having originals of the previous documents, they must provide a certificate or its equivalent, issued by the national or foreign college legally recognized by the competent authority, where the following is stated: a) Name of the institution; b) Name and identification document number of the graduate; c) Name of the baccalaureate or its equivalent; d) Degree awarded; e) Date of issuance of the title; f) High school credits or grades or their equivalent. In case of being a foreign student, these documents must be provided with an apostille seal or legalization through diplomatic channels and their translation into Spanish.

Given the profile of the curricular educational model "CYBERHUMANIST" of the university, the student must: 

  • The permanence in the University will depend solely and exclusively on the student's motivation, capacity and vision to obtain the chosen academic degree.
  • In order to pass each subject, the participant must obtain a minimum grade of 71 on a scale of 1 to 100, which is equivalent to item C. 
  • Respect and comply with the regulations established by the statutes that regulate the relationship between the Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology and the students of the Institution, taking into account the principles and values of the human being.
  • Keep payments up to date.
  • Attend at least 80% of scheduled meetings in face-to-face and semi face-to-face mode. In case of prolonged absence, you must duly present the argumentation that justifies it. 
  • For studies under the virtual modality, attendance is regulated by constant interaction in all activities planned on the platform, including synchronous and asynchronous meetings, as well as the development of the student's autonomous work.
  • The student is responsible for the construction of their knowledge, willingness to work and collaborative learning, study in a team on their own, investigate, be self-taught and contribute to self-knowledge and self-motivation. 
  • For those students who lose academic continuity (i.e. defer or withdraw) and wish to continue their studies or did not fulfill their degree requirement, they must apply for reinstatement to the current program approved by CTDA and must comply with the validation and homologation regulations.  
  • The term of permanence at the University will be in accordance with the number of quarters that make up the academic program.
  • The student in cases of force majeure or fortuitous event must submit to the contingency plans or document that takes its place.

To obtain the title of Technician is required:

  • Take and pass all the subjects of the study plan with a minimum grade of 71 points equivalent to a C. 
  • Maintain a cumulative academic index of no less than one (1.0) on a scale of zero to three (1 to 3).
  • Take, support and approve the professional practice in accordance with the hours established in the study plan and/or required in the current regulations that regulate the practice of the profession.
  • Be in good standing with the institution (financial, academic, and library).

 

TO OBTAIN THE BACHELOR'S DEGREE, THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED:

  • Take and pass all the subjects of the study plan with a minimum grade of 71 points equivalent to a C. 
  • Maintain a cumulative academic index of not less than one (1.0) on a scale of one to three (1 to 3).
  • Take, support and approve the professional practice in accordance with the hours established in the study plan and/or required in the current regulations that regulate the practice of the profession.
  • Take a certification exam of a second language recognized by UNESCO, in accordance with internal regulations.
  • Complete and approve one of the following requirements: 
    • Prepare, support, and approve research work (Thesis) in their area of knowledge.
    • Postgraduate subjects.
    • Diploma in the disciplinary area. 


  • Be in good standing with the institution (financial, academic, and library).

 

KNOW

  • Learn about the conceptualizations that underpin occupational health and safety management in its scientific and professional aspects.
  • Identifies the types of occupational safety and health management methods and procedures.
  • Recognizes the importance of the functional state of the collaborator/employer at work, considering their physical, psychological and social aspects.
  • Knows the different methods and procedures applicable to Occupational Safety and Health.
  • Identifies the ergonomic and anthropometric principles from national and international regulations in safety and health management systems.
  • Identifies the processes inherent to Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Learn about the comprehensive approach of the Occupational Health and Safety system.

  • Prevents occupational risks based on the real situation of each company
  • Execute observation skills in a timely and effective manner, to detect unsafe acts and conditions in organizations
  • Controls and supervises the main high-risk activities (work at height, confined spaces, hot work, electrical work, among others.)
  • Disseminates and informs the staff about the implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety system, in favor of a permanent risk prevention.
  • Conducts training in the different fields of its competence for personal improvement and professional development.
  • Integrates interdisciplinary research teams for the identification and solution of problems related to the fields of their performance.
  • Solves efficiently and effectively the problems inherent to its performance.
  • Faces diverse challenges with ethical commitment, before the application of methods to obtain effective results.
  • Performs its work in accordance with the regulations in force in the area.
