The black ethnic group has played a historically important role in Panama, contributing significantly to the formation and development of the country. Throughout the centuries, the presence and contribution of the Afro-descendant population has left a profound mark on various aspects of Panamanian society, including culture, economy, politics and national identity.

For this reason, the Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology -UMECIT- has been carrying out several events around this celebration, with the purpose of exalting our cultural roots and part of our national identity.

The history of black ethnicity in Panama is closely linked to the colonial period and the construction of the Panama Canal. During the time of Spanish colonization, Africans were brought to Panama as slaves to work on plantations, in mines and in the construction of infrastructure. Their labor was fundamental to the economic development of the region.

The construction of the Panama Canal in the early 20th century also had a significant impact on the Afro-descendant presence in the country. Thousands of Afro-Antillean workers were hired to carry out the most arduous and dangerous tasks in the construction of the canal. Their contribution was crucial to the success of this emblematic project, which transformed Panama into a major global trade route.

The cultural influence of the black ethnic group in Panama is evident in various aspects, such as music, dance, gastronomy and religious traditions. The tamborito, cumbia and conga are popular Afro-Panamanian musical genres, reflecting the rich African heritage in the country's traditional music. In addition, festivities such as the Congo de Portobelo and the Festival del Diablico Sucio are cultural expressions that highlight the Afro-Panamanian identity.

In political terms, the black population has fought for the recognition of their rights and equal opportunities. Afro-descendant organizations have played an important role in defending civil rights and promoting inclusion and social justice for black communities in Panama.

In summary, the black ethnic group has had a significant historical importance in Panama. Their contribution to the construction of the Panama Canal and their cultural influence in music, dance, gastronomy and religious traditions have left a deep mark on Panamanian society. In addition, the struggle for equal rights and the promotion of inclusion have been important aspects of the history of the Afro-descendant population in the country.
